Lived philosophy, the big questions and the small ones that keep nagging at you, poetry and a lot of thoughts that need to be spoken out to be heard…
A blog about a lot of things, but mainly about how to bridge the gap between the high theories about life and man in it, and life that is messy, unordered and ultimately painful.
The Philosopher’s Attic is a relic from the year I spent working and living in Paris.
At the time it was a great way of keeping in touch with people without having to call everybody up in person etc. The name The Philosopher’s Attic comes from my tiny apartment I had in the 11th arondissement: it was directly under the roof and so small that it really felt like an attic room…
When I got back I somehow stopped writing that much. I did however keep up the poetry (of course), but it didn’t feel like it needed publishing and that was that.
Then we (my fiancé and me) started to set up a work related blog for the use of Mediaeval researchers (Mediaevaliter.com) and once that was done I was somehow missing my space in the web, where I could do rants without half of my peers having to read about it. And so… I migrated my own blog here to Mediaevaliter and gave it a reliable Worpress base.
For the ones that don’t know me, here’s the simple facts:
I am a professional academic in the field of Mediaeval Philosophy. And that just about says it all. I write a lot (and I mean A LOT) and I am passionate about anything that might spark my interest. I live in Switzerland and am madly in love with a Swiss (tee… what a surprise… well, he is a French Swiss, so that’s very unusual seeing that I am a German Swiss).
Working with WordPress has helped me to take Internet Design and coding to a new level for me. While before I had no idea how to write a php script or even consider to set up a MySQL db, WP has so many possibilities to customize your blog that I jumped right on.
The last couple of years have been taxing and demanding as I am trying to find new footing in my old work (philosophy) and realign it with my new job in being an administrator and coordinator of a high level research Centre for Evolutionary Medicine.
A lot of the research done at the ZEM involves historical human remains and very few research exists on the ethical dimensions of this research. We will see where this takes me, but working to build understanding for ethical questions with researchers coming form topics as varied as anthopology, archeology, ancient DNA research, molecular biology, physics and radiology is a challenge by any means.
Other challenges arise daily of course, as I have become a mother and am raising our little girl with my husband staying at home and me working full time.
The rest about this blog and me will come with reading. If you want to contact me about anything (books, philosophy etc.) or have any suggestions, you can contact me through any of my social media contacts or my email.
