Whatever it is that makes you pause and savor life is a good thing. I enjoyed this reminder to slow the body and mind very much.

Happy birthday sweetheart. Be strong and brave and smart, and listen to your parents-- they know more than you do!

To my dear friends: all the best Christmas greetings from Shanghai! I feel so blessed to know both of you. Love you and miss you.

With many hugs and green tea,
X.

I love this! I love how special Amelie is to you (both) and how despite some struggles and disappointments - this little light has shown in the darkness. May she continue to shine and may her bright gaze give you strength always!

What a beautiful post.
Children are indeed a blessing, in many ways.
Remember this when she is refusing to eat, or her first word is 'non'

Excellent point. However, short term perception is not on the same level as hard facts. If anything the reason we are calling them hard facts is that they are hard, independent of any kind of perception at all.
In a society, we need to focus on the 'masses' and their perceptions unfortunately, before losing scope of the self-made realities which make people that much more receptive to manipulation.
But if love your point. And I am taking it. Touché.

Good post! Although I'm not sure if I'm getting something wrong here.. Short term perception usually has nothing to do with hard facts - be it the feeling of insecurity of a society or the stock market. But what one can't beat are the fundamental data, be it for the economy or a whole society or be it for an individual stock. That's what I like about Pinkers arguments - don't look at the short term perception but at the data behind. Unfortunately he forgets to set the title right.. it's not Cassandra being wrong - it's the assumed Cassandras begin wrong.. the real Cassandras are the fundamental data - and the challenge remains to find out which one in the cacophony of (assumed) Cassandras is the real one.. and as you mention Pinkers focus on the number of death in wars maybe not the best choice...
